Monday, Dec 8th

Today we went to the computer lab and students were able to look up the budget templates in the "New Assignment" folders and begin budgeting with their room mates.

Students also started their Annual Yearly Journals. They created an entry about graduating and moving out and starting their lives. Many were surprised by the numbers and amounts that life throws at them.

At this time students should have accessed:

1. The budget template
2. The annual yearly journal
3. The "College Costs" spreadsheet

Four of our girls "broke up" with their imaginary bofriends because they will be meeting new boys tomorrow (real boys from the class) they don't know who, but they are excited and nervous.

Day 3

Today we reviewed all of the workbook and case studies and took the Chapter 1 Test.

Monica graduated from LBCC with an A.A.S. Degree in Medical Assisting and Brittany and Malcolm graduated from LCC with A.A.S. Degrees in Culinary arts. Brittany will now continue on to get her BS in Business.

Monday we will be in the Computer Lab and we will get started budgeting!

Day 2

We watched the rest of the Chapter 1 video for Dave.

We spent a lot of time talking about the impact of saving early. The Ben and Arthur story is so powerful one guy spends $16,000 of his own money and retires with over 2 million dollars, the other spends $78,000 of his own money and retires with half a million dollars less! How did that happen? You have to see the video!

Everyone finished their LHS paid free year at LBCC and are ready to continue their education on their own dimes....

Day 1

Yesterday we watched Dave's personal testimony and the intro to the class. Students were given a quick quiz about their personal lives for matching up purposes so I can give them spouses. The girls all picked their "boyfriends" (famous people pictures with nothing but a letter by their face) once they picked the boyfriend I told them his name and his occupation and how much money he will make. It is dangerous to pick based on looks on alone!

They also took a pretest.

Students should have the following documents:

1. Class Policies
2. Class Syllabus
3. Workbook Intro pages
4. The table of contents
5. Unit 1 Intro page for Workbook
6. Before You Begin Ch 1 Worksheet
7. Ch 1 Workbook
8. Glossary
9. The Seven Baby Steps handout

Welcome to Your Future!

Hello,

Welcome to Personal Finance. Even though I have been a Spanish teacher for 14 years and I love it and know the value of it, since I started teaching Personal Finance I have learned that it is THE MOST VALUABLE CLASS that a student can take!

We will be walking you through 50 years of life. You will go to school, get a job, deal with debt, get married and have kids. You have only limited control of your virtual life. I decide who you marry, when you marry, how many kids you will have and when they are born. (You do get to name them, but I will continue to give you information about them as they grow.)

It's just like..... LIFE! You never know what wrenches will tork your plans and what emergencies might dissolve your savings. The span of your life will help you to see the long-term effects of your choices. Anyone can learn to make a budget, but can you truly visualize 50 years of savings? Anyone can write a check, but do you understand how your personality might impact your ability to sit down and take care of the monthly bills?

I will individualize your life to your choices in terms of profession and education level. I will also give you parameters for budgets. Some of the budget numbers I give you might seem a bit much, but all of them have been researched and are accurate to date. Also, I will make you pay for somethings that you might never actually use (especially after taking this class), but I also will not be making you note every time you go to McDonald's or the 7-11.

The main thing to remember is that while this is a virtual game of sorts, it is not truly over until you have actually put things into place in your real life.

If this is a game, I win if you end up rich!

Welcome to your future!
